Introduction
A broken streak can make a small lapse feel much larger than it really is. The missed workout, lesson or reading session costs one repetition; a streak counter can additionally turn it into the apparent loss of 20, 50 or 200 days of accumulated success. That distinction matters because the record can influence what someone does next even when their underlying behaviour has barely changed.
Experimental research provides unusually direct evidence for this effect. Across seven studies of exercise, language learning and games, people were more likely to continue an activity when an intact streak was highlighted than when a broken streak was highlighted. Crucially, some experiments held participants’ actual previous behaviour constant. What changed was the way that behaviour appeared in the log.[DOI]doi.orgOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
The danger, then, is not simply missing a day. It is allowing a display of discontinuity to turn a recoverable lapse into a reason not to return.
How intact and broken streak displays changed later behaviour
The clearest demonstration comes from research by Jackie Silverman and Alixandra Barasch published in the Journal of Consumer Research. Their studies investigated what happens when apps make consecutive behaviour conspicuous through logs and streak counters. Across the research programme, intact logged streaks encouraged subsequent engagement relative to broken ones, including when the participants’ underlying behaviour did not differ.[DOI]doi.orgOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
One exercise experiment makes the problem concrete. Participants completed four consecutive strength exercises. For some, however, the fourth exercise appeared not to have been logged, producing a visually broken streak. Participants then chose whether to perform another strength exercise or switch to stretching. Among those shown an intact streak, 66.23% chose another strength exercise, compared with 57.86% of those shown the broken streak. The odds of continuing the target behaviour were 1.43 times higher with the intact display.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
The striking part is what had not changed: the participants had actually performed the same four strength exercises. The researchers could therefore separate the psychological effect of the log from explanations such as having exercised less, developed less expertise or become more bored. Simply representing the same recent behaviour as intact rather than broken altered the next real behavioural choice.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
Language-learning experiments produced the same general pattern. Highlighting an intact streak made participants more likely to continue the streak-related activity, whereas drawing attention to a broken streak reduced persistence. Across the full programme, the effect appeared in a fitness field study and controlled experiments involving exercise, language learning and games.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford Academic…
This does not establish that every broken streak causes someone to abandon a habit, or that streaks are generally harmful. Indeed, the same research shows why streaks are attractive: an intact one can encourage another repetition. The more precise criticism is that the motivational system is asymmetric. The display that helps while the chain remains intact can become a source of discouragement once the chain breaks.
That distinction is especially important in habit building because the psychological reset shown by the counter need not correspond to a behavioural reset. In Phillippa Lally and colleagues’ real-world habit-formation study, participants repeated a chosen eating, drinking or activity behaviour in a consistent context for 12 weeks. Missing one opportunity did not materially disrupt the development of automaticity. Very inconsistent repetition was a different matter, but a single miss was not equivalent to starting again from scratch.[Wiley Online Library]onlinelibrary.wiley.comWiley Online LibraryHow are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world - Lally - 2010 - European Journal of Social Psycho…
A streak counter therefore measures something narrower than accumulated habit progress. It measures uninterrupted consecutiveness.
Why the streak can become a goal of its own
Silverman and Barasch’s explanation is more specific than the familiar idea that people merely dislike seeing a zero. Their studies suggest that maintaining the logged streak becomes a separate goal in its own right. Participants were not only pursuing exercise, learning or game performance; once the sequence was made salient, they also began pursuing preservation of the sequence. Measures of the goal of maintaining the streak helped explain the effect of intact versus broken displays on subsequent behaviour.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford Academic…
This creates two overlapping goals:
Underlying goal: exercise regularly, learn a language, practise an instrument, read more often.
Streak goal: keep the displayed sequence unbroken.
For as long as they point in the same direction, the distinction barely matters. Wanting to exercise and wanting to preserve a 30-day exercise streak both encourage today’s workout. Once a lapse occurs, however, the goals separate. Today’s workout still advances fitness, but it can no longer save yesterday’s perfect sequence. A source of motivation has therefore disappeared at exactly the moment when returning matters most.
The experiments support this interpretation through participants’ sense of accomplishment. Intact streaks increased feelings associated with progress towards the streak goal, while broken streaks reduced them. In the researchers’ mediation analyses, sense of accomplishment helped explain later behavioural engagement. The effect was not simply a matter of participants experiencing more general negative emotion after a break.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
Responsibility for the break also mattered. In one experiment, the discouraging difference between intact and broken streaks became larger when participants attributed the break to themselves rather than to an external cause. This fits the goal-failure account: an interruption interpreted as my failure carries different motivational information from an identical-looking interruption blamed on a technical problem or other outside event.[DOI]doi.orgOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
The value attached to the record could become surprisingly tangible. In one experiment, 45% of participants said they were willing to watch an advertisement to maintain their logged streak, while 43% were willing to do so to repair a broken one. The counter was therefore not functioning merely as neutral information about past behaviour; people were willing to incur an immediate inconvenience to preserve or restore it.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
This is the central risk of streak-based self-improvement. The proxy can begin competing with the purpose. Someone may possess weeks of practice, improved skill and a substantially established routine, yet the interface foregrounds the one property they have just lost: perfect consecutiveness.
Why one miss can look like the loss of everything
Consider someone who practises a language on 59 of 60 days. Viewed as accumulated behaviour, that is 59 practice sessions and a completion rate above 98%. Viewed through a current-streak counter immediately after the missed day, it may appear as “0” or “1”.
Those representations answer different questions. The first asks how consistently the person has actually practised. The second asks how many consecutive qualifying days precede the present moment. Trouble arises when the emotional meaning of the second is mistaken for the behavioural meaning of the first.
Habit-formation evidence gives good reason to resist that interpretation. Lally and colleagues found gradual increases in automaticity with repetition in a stable context, rather than an all-or-nothing transformation determined by uninterrupted days. Their estimates varied greatly between individuals, and an isolated missed opportunity did not materially affect the formation process.[Wiley Online Library]onlinelibrary.wiley.comWiley Online LibraryHow are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world - Lally - 2010 - European Journal of Social Psycho…
The two research strands therefore reveal an important mismatch. Habit development can retain much of its accumulated progress across an occasional lapse, while a streak display treats that same lapse as a categorical transition from intact to broken. The counter is technically correct about consecutiveness but potentially misleading as a picture of overall progress.
That is why the period immediately after a miss deserves special attention. Before the lapse, the streak supplies an extra reason to act: “I don’t want to lose this.” After it, that reason has vanished. If the person also interprets the broken counter as evidence that previous effort no longer counts, the interface has transformed one missed repetition into a second motivational problem.
How repairable streaks may reduce post-lapse discouragement
If the problem partly arises because a broken streak makes the streak goal seem irretrievable, allowing repair should make returning more attractive. Silverman and Barasch tested precisely that prediction.
In their seventh study, 601 participants used a simulated gaming app. After playing a sequence of games, participants were assigned to an intact-streak condition, a broken-streak condition or a broken streak that could be repaired by choosing the same type of game again. The next choice provided a direct measure of whether they returned to the target behaviour.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
The differences were substantial. 93.14% of participants with an intact streak continued the target behaviour. Among those with an ordinary broken streak, the figure fell to 68.66%. But when the broken streak could be repaired, continuation rose to 85.20%. Participants offered repair were 2.63 times as likely to choose the target behaviour as participants facing the non-repairable break.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
Repair did not completely reproduce the motivational effect of a genuinely uninterrupted streak. The authors suggest that a repaired streak might be perceived as less valuable or authentic. Nevertheless, the intervention recovered a considerable part of the engagement lost after the break, while participants in the two broken-streak conditions had experienced essentially the same preceding interruption.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
Real products have independently adopted related forms of flexibility.[Duolingo]duolingo.comOpen source on duolingo.com., for example, has described its “Streak Freeze” as a mechanism that preserves a streak when a learner misses a practice day. The company reported that increasing the number of freezes users could equip produced a 0.38% relative increase in daily active learners rather than encouraging more absence. That is company-reported observational/product evidence rather than an independent test of the Silverman-Barasch mechanism, so it should not be treated as equivalent evidence. It does, however, illustrate how a large-scale learning product has tried to make streaks less brittle.[Duolingo Blog]blog.duolingo.comBlog The Duolingo Streak Uses Habit Research to Keep You MotivatedBlog The Duolingo Streak Uses Habit Research to Keep You Motivated
The research also suggests options beyond literal repair. Silverman and Barasch argue that behavioural systems could avoid prominently announcing broken streaks, broaden the behaviours that qualify, or use less rigid periods such as weekly rather than strictly daily sequences. These designs preserve feedback about consistency without making one interruption disproportionately salient.[OUP Academic]academic.oup.comOUP AcademicOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford Academic…
The useful target is return, not an unbroken record
Broken-streak research sharpens the distinction between consistency and perfection. Consistency asks whether a behaviour keeps recurring over time. Perfection asks whether there has ever been an interruption. Those standards can produce very different judgements of exactly the same behavioural history.
Streaks remain useful because they make repetition visible and can motivate the next action while they are intact. The evidence does not support abandoning them categorically. It supports recognising their failure mode: a streak can become valuable enough that losing the record reduces motivation to continue the behaviour the record was supposed to support.[DOI]doi.orgOn or Off Track: How (Broken) Streaks Affect Consumer Decisions | Journal of Consumer Research | Oxford AcademicJune 30, 2022…
A more resilient interpretation treats a broken streak as information about one interruption rather than a verdict on everything preceding it. That interpretation fits the underlying habit evidence better: an occasional missed opportunity does not erase the automaticity already built through repeated behaviour.[Wiley Online Library]onlinelibrary.wiley.comWiley Online LibraryHow are habits formed: Modelling habit formation in the real world - Lally - 2010 - European Journal of Social Psycho…
For long-term self-improvement, the revealing measure is therefore not only the length of the longest uninterrupted chain. It is what happens after the chain breaks. A system that repeatedly brings someone back after ordinary disruptions may support a durable habit better than one that produces an impressive number right up until the first unavoidable miss.
